Remodeling a New Kitchen
Oct 6th
My neighbors next door are remodeling their house. Not just a little, a LOT. They’ve busted out the one-car garage, and are making a two-car garage, and a wood-working shop on one corner of the house. On the back of the house, they’ve closed in a screened porch and are extending the kitchen, totally remolding the inside. They’ve bricked in a window on the other corner of the house, and are remodeling the bathroom there. New roof, new flooring, lots and lots of new stuff.
She is a “foodie” as we fondly call someone who really loves cooking and enjoying food. More >
Save On Everything
Mar 22nd
Well, we’re all ready to save some money aren’t we?
The cost of food just keeps going up and up and up. Going out to eat isn’t just an impulse anymore; it takes some thought about where to go, and whether or not it’s worth it. I know I’m always happy to get one of those buy-one-get-one-free coupons in the mail, aren’t you? I’ve also subscribed to several of those coupon-a-day email services that send you one special deal every day. Each day they are from a different business in your area (according to zip code I think) and they usually More >
4 Great Things To Do With Baking Soda
Feb 23rd
Going Green? Trying to? Just making a stab at it? One of the things you need is going to be Baking Soda. It’s long been recognized as one of the essentials in any healthy home. Not only is it cheap, it is a great alternative to those over-priced “natural” items you find in the health food stores. Does a great job, too.
Here are some ways to make use of the wonder of baking soda:
On surface stains-With the addition of a warm wet sponge, it can deal with stains on your stove, your counter, your tub, your sink.

Home Made Vapor Balm
Feb 15th
The thing that does the trick in the classic commercially-made vapor rubs is the Eucalyptus and the Menthol. These are good things, and we all know the comforting feeling it brings when that stuffy head cold sets in.
Unfortunately, there are some not-so-good ingredients in that same vapor rub, like Petroleum, and Turpentine. Fortunately, I have a recipe for making a home made version that will do you good, and is good for you in all ways. Here you go…
½ cup olive oil (organic is best)
½ to 1 tsp organic Menthol (this will be in crystals)
1 ounce of beeswax, coarsely chopped More >
Is There Any Radon In The House?
Feb 12th
Our home is our castle, right? We keep it clean, we keep it decorated, and we keep it maintained. So everything is comfy, cozy, and healthy, right? Maybe not.
Have you had your house checked for radon?
Radon is a gas, a radioactive gas that is found all over the US in homes just like yours. It is made from the breakdown of uranium in the soil, rock, and water underneath your house. If you haven’t tested for it, you have no way of knowing it is there. What happens is, when the rocks break down, way underground, the radon is freed, More >
Burt to the Rescue- No More Itch
Feb 9th
February in the South is when you start to see the first signs of Spring. The jonquils are out in full force, the cherry trees are blooming, and the forsythia shows its bright yellow flowers around every corner. It’s also the time when I start thinking about those nasty mosquitoes that are soon to make their presence known.
I don’t know why my yard has so many mosquitoes. There are no ponds nearby, nor even any streams or low lying marshy lands. As a matter of fact, I live on a ridge of land, and am not any where near the More >
Drowning in Those Plastic Shopping Bags?
Feb 4th
Plastic shopping bags- they seem to breed when you’re not looking. First there’s one over there in the corner, then there’s one on the table. Oh, no! There’s a couple more in the bedroom! Where do they all come from?
Well, of course we know where. Over the years, I have tried to buy cloth shopping bags to use whenever I go to the grocery. But somehow, they get left at home, or even worse, get used for other purposes, and then they’re not available for me to use at the store. Seems like no matter how many bags I buy More >
Hydrogen Peroxide for Stains
Jan 21st
Stains in all their various categories are often an irritant in any Mom’s life, and sometimes being able to get one out is a minor victory for the day. As a mom of 4, seems like I spent at least a part of every single day battling stains from grass, red mud, grease, blood, dirt, foods, you name it. One of the hardest stains I ever have to deal with is grease, but amazingly, one of the easiest to deal with is blood. Perhaps because it is a protein stain, blood can be removed almost 100% by using hydrogen peroxide. More >
Use Essential Oils to De-stress
Jan 11th
Nowdays, everyone is just a little stressed, yes? The world is moving fast, time itself seems to be going fast. Nerves are shot, deadlines come at us fast, and many people are just on their last nerve. Instead of reaching for that prescription drug, or anxiety medication, perhaps you could try a more natural answer to dealing with tension and stress. You could use Aromatherapy to help you relax. Here’s what to do.
1- First, breath deeply. Take some really deep breaths. Relax, and focus on one small happy thing, no matter how small, and be in the present moment, not More >
